“ABM has opened up a whole new way of life for me.”

Helena, aged 63, said, “I have a purpose in life now since I got involved with Ageing Better Middlesbrough.”

Helena volunteering 2

Our volunteer, Helena, moved to Middlesbrough four years ago. She knew no-one and had worries about being on her own. After seeing a poster in her local library inviting people to an Ageing Better Middlesbrough event, Helena decided to go along and see what it was all about. “I’m really pleased I went” she said, “I met Kelly, the Volunteering Development Officer. She helped me to meet people and get involved in different things.”

Helena is now an Ageing Better Middlesbrough ‘Digital Champion’ and is looking forward to helping other people learn how to email and Skype their friends and family around the world.

As well as her love of technology, Helena also volunteers at The Trinity Community Garden, North Ormesby every Friday. The garden has been transformed in just a few weeks. So far, a variety of fruit, vegetables, salad and herbs have been planted. The Trinity Centre staff plan to use the products in their cooking classes for the local community.

Ann Lennon, Families Worker, said: “We’d love more people to get involved. We’re here every Friday morning from 09.30am and everyone is welcome to come along and give us a hand.”

If you’re interested in gardening and growing your own veg you can go along to the Trinity Centre community allotment on a Friday 9.30am-11.30am. Contact Tina on 01642 803328 or tinabonner@ageukteesside.org.uk or Anne on 07496 890429 or annelennontycp@hotmail.com
