The Lunch Club

Cheery smiles, conversation and good food welcome regular customers to The Lunch Club every Thursday at Middlesbrough and Stockton Mind in The Community Hall, 90-92 Lothian Road.

This weekly cafe was started in 2012 by a group of volunteers who wanted to help people in need. The cook, Chris, explains “I started the lunch club because I wanted to help a man who hadn’t had a hot meal in weeks. It’s so popular we run it weekly.”

Paul and Spike serve the meals. Spike says its good value for money “a two course meal and a hot drink for £2.50.”

Paul helped out at Roseberry Park (formerly St Luke’s Hospital) for 12 years and says, “It gets me out of the house and I can chat with the people that come here every week.”

Sharon and Eileen help in the kitchen. They say that being involved has improved their confidence to join in with other things.

Chris sums up the importance of the weekly meal by saying, “We all get a lot of satisfaction and meet new friends in the club.”

The Lunch Club is open to the local community!
