Live longer, join a choir
A local group of Barbershop singers from Acklam are singing their way to longer, healthier lives.
Northern Acchord is the North East’s only Barbershop Harmony Chorus and has been going from strength to strength since it was formed ten years ago.
The smooth harmonies of the male vocal-only group have proved popular with music lovers in Teesside and it now has 40 members!
But it’s the health and social benefits of singing that have kept people coming back and propelled the group to greater success, performing gigs around the country.
Norman (70) from Middlesbrough said: “You will not meet a better bunch of guys around. Singing is good for your soul.”
And he may have a very good point. Experts have found that singing, especially in a choir, can reduce stress and anxiety, increase happiness levels and add years to your life.
Northern Accord is working with Ageing Better Middlesbrough to promote these benefits and encourage local people to sing towards happier, healthier futures.
The group meets every Tuesday evening at the Acorn Centre, Acklam Grange School, and welcomes aspiring male voices of any ability.
Another member, Alan (78), from Billingham, said: “It’s the camaraderie of the club. It gets me out and meeting good people. It makes us feel good to entertain people.”
They teach people how to sing and make the most of their vocal talents. Not to mention getting to wear some rather snazzy outfits for performances!
Ged (54), Secretary of the group said, “I joined the club a year ago after attending a ‘learn to sing’ course by the British Barber Shop Association, and now I’m the secretary! It’s the togetherness and the guys have mentored me. I never thought I could sing a note!”
