This week we have been speaking to Ageing Better Middlesbrough member and Vice Chair of South Cleveland Heart Fund, Sam Hussain.
The Middlesbrough based charity have dedicated their time to raising awareness of the cardiology department at James Cook University Hospital, and this year they are celebrating their 25th anniversary.
“We have raised over 3 million pounds for the unit since we started. Said Sam.
“Our biggest achievement came in the shape of an appeal to raise 1 million pounds for a much needed scanner on the ward – and we done that within 18 months.”
However, celebrations have been cut short due to current circumstances, so as you can imagine 2020 hasn’t been great for them so far.
The Covid-19 outbreak has meant that they have had to cancel several fundraising events (including a charity golf day and a soul music night) but despite this, Sam is as determined as ever to raise awareness.
“Its vital that we keep raising funds. He said.
“Purchasing the best equipment so that the unit is at the cutting edge of development is very important, but in the current climate its difficult to do so.
“Many charities like ours have been majorly effected by the pandemic but we are doing everything we can to keep going.”
Sam is hoping that, by recruiting new volunteers for the committee, they can inject new fundraising ideas to help make up for losses across the year and help them celebrate their 25th anniversary in alternative and exciting ways.
“We want people to help us reach the next level and to help organise alternative activities and events so that we can show people that, despite whats happening, we are still here doing everything we can for the cardiology department.”
You can also raise funds by heading over to their Facebook page, where you can purchase hoodies, pens, chocolates and lots of other gifts.
